What is an MOT Test?

An MOT test is an annual inspection required in the UK for all vehicles over three years old. The check-up can gauge your car’s safety, environmental impact, and overall roadworthiness to ensure it meets the legal requirements. If your vehicle passes the examination, you will receive an MOT testing certificate to prove your car is ready for the road.

Does My Car Need an MOT?

If you own a car or vehicle that has been on the road for more than three years since new, UK law states you must have a current MOT certificate. Please note that some vehicles require an MOT test as young as one year old — you can view the MOT Fees Table to find out when you should book your service.

When Does My Car Need an MOT Test?

An MOT test must be carried out annually by a qualified tester to ensure your vehicle meets the minimum safety requirements set out by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). Without a current MOT certificate for your car, you cannot lawfully drive it on the roads — you also won’t be able to renew your road tax.

You can have your vehicle tested up to 28 days before the expiry date shown on your current MOT certificate.

What Does an MOT Test Involve?

During an MOT test, a DVSA accredited tester inspects and carries out a thorough series of checks on your vehicle. These assessments are carried out on the interior and exterior, including in the engine bay and the vehicle’s underside, to ensure that it’s in a safe and roadworthy condition.

Our technicians will record the results of each check and if your vehicle meets the required standards, you will be issued an MOT pass certificate (VT20), concluding that your car is safe to drive on the roads.

You may be issued with some advisory items separately, detailing the parts on your vehicle that show wear and tear and may require attention soon. Your mechanic should look at these advisory items and, if necessary, replace or repair them before the next MOT is due.

If your vehicle fails the MOT test, its condition has been deemed unsafe for road use by the tester. You will be issued a VT30 failure document and supplied with a list of the items that caused the vehicle to fail the test. Thankfully, our mechanics are on-hand to discuss any possible problems and swiftly make the necessary repairs to get you back on track.

Please note that an MOT test is not the same as having your vehicle serviced — an MOT simply ensures the car is roadworthy. Our mechanics can combine your MOT test with general servicing to maintain its health, detect any potential or current issues and keep your vehicle in tip-top condition.
